DC Rebrand Jon Kent From ‘Superman’ To ‘Super Son’

With the highly anticipated ‘Summer of Superman‘ fast approaching, DC Comics has been announcing all kinds of new comic book series, costume changes, and now a rebranding of Jon Kent’s hero moniker. DC revealed that he’ll be known as ‘Super Son’ going forward, which means that Jon can now be more easily distinguished from Clark and Conner.

Nicole Maines, the former Dreamer actress from ‘Supergirl’ and current comic book writer, is working on the new Secret Six series which features Jon Kent and she stated that this could help the character grow. “Becoming Super Son is a good thing for Jon Kent,” said Maines. “It gives him a chance to be his own person and explore new storylines.

Jon’s superhero name has always been a fairly hot topic amongst fans. Beginning as Superboy was very logical as Conner Kent had been erased from continuity when Jon debuted. Shortly after Conner’s return, Jon is rapidly aged and Clark leaves Earth for an extended period of time making way for Jon taking up Superman as a legacy name.

Since Clark’s return Kong Kenan has also been more prominent within the El family making three characters who call themselves Superman (although Kenan’s is with a distinctive hyphen between Super and Man). Changing Jon’s super name once again makes sense in order to distinguish him as his own character, but as the future Trinity stories indicate, this may just be a temporary situation as he seems destined to be Earth’s next Superman eventually.
