Action Comics #1087 kick starts Mark Waid’s take and reintroduction to Clark Kent as Superboy. I have been so excited for this following the Superman Superstars initiative and it’s safe to say I wasn’t disappointed.

But before we get into the issue itself, let’s take a look at the covers. Ryan Sook’s main cover is fantastic! It really pops with the use of colours, it related to the story and gives you everything you need in a Superman cover.

David Talaski’s variant is perfection. I have admired his unique and classic art style for a while now, but this cover is something special!

Leirix’s cover brings us an anime style art cover showcasing Superboy flexing his muscles. I love the cosmic background, the glimmers, the colours and the shading on this piece, it’s really pretty.

REVIEW: Action Comics #1087

Action Comics #1087 is a powerful, fun, and easy to follow issue kicking off the new focus of the series. I admit, I was nervous about the title switching to a Superboy focus (I ascribe to the “Clark didn’t have a costume until SuperMAN” take on his history), but this issue assuaged a lot of my concerns by being – to pull from the issue itself – “neat”. And I mean that in both contexts; it was enjoyable and a fun view at a side of Superman’s history that hasn’t been explored in years (his time in Smallville), and it was very well-organized, with pacing, character work, and plot all moving synchronously. Overall, a really good start by Mark Waid to a run and an era of Superman that I’m excited to get more of as each ongoing series progresses.

I’m not familiar with Skylar Partridge’s work prior to this issue, but she’s got a really nice angular style that isn’t too in your face. It reminds me of Francis Manapaul and Lee Garbett, both of whom are artist’s I love. I hope that she stays on the book for awhile, and it’s always great to see more women creators in comics.

(8/10) Action Comics #0187 is a solid issue that has a really good start, I look forward too seeing more of Clark’s adventures.
