DC Comics recently announced at the recent ComicsPro Retailer Convention and revealed via IGN.com, a new alternate reality comic, entitled DC Mech will be hitting the shelves this July.
The series will be written by Kenny Porter with art by Baldemar Rivas and Mike Spicer. DC Mech is set in a reality where the world is preparing for the immenant return of alien invaders with use of giant robots. Taking inspiration from his love of the mecha genre of anime, Porter has stated, “DC Comics and iconic series like Mobile Suit Gundam, Robotech, and Neon Genesis Evangelion all have these amazing stories, characters, and designs that work surprisingly well together. I wanted to write a story that got both the DC fan and the mecha fan in me excited, and I assure you, I went all out with both aspects.”
I have to say the preview art looks great and truly has an anime flair. Here’s a look at some of the cover art and concept designs:
Baldemar Rivas has also stated, “We all wanted to write a love letter to the genre of Mecha anime and what we wanted to see, while fusing it with the DC Universe. I wanted to really immerse myself in the world and set each design apart with unique qualities. This is the most fulfilling creative project I’ve worked on yet and I am so excited to share it with DC and mech fans alike.”
DC Mech joins a growing list of multiversal stories that put familiar characters outside their familiar genres. Personally, I find this mash-up intriguing and look forward to seeing the final product this summer.
DC Mech #1 (of 6) is on sale July 26th.
