Royal Selangor is a Malaysian pewter manufacturer which have just announced pre-orders for their latest pewter statues. And yes, they are Superman and is based on his appearance from Frank Miller’s iconic graphic novel “The Dark Knight Returns”.
When it comes to the Man of Steel, Royal Selangor has hit it out of the park before with their previously released Superman silver and gold statues based on his first appearance in Action Comics #1. They always release their hand-crafted pewter statues in silver and gold variants with comic book covers and panels in the background display. They are truly stunning.
In “The Dark Knight Returns,” Superman is seen as an antagonist with good intentions as he attempts to stop Batman from returning to vigilantism on the order of the government. Miller notably sightly exaggerated some of his classic features in his art to make him look larger and more imposing – you can see this with his larger belt, chest insignia, and even his curl. This combined with Batman’s hefty power armor made for one of the most famous and influential fights in comic book history. Movies like Batman v. Superman would not exist without it.
Here’s a closer look at the newly released Royal Selangor Superman pieces:
Royal Selangor’s “The Dark Knight Returns” Superman statues come in both silver and gold variants and are limited edition. The pieces are limited to 800 for the silver statues and is limited to just 200 of the gold ones. Though these pieces are pricey, with the silver one costing $865.00 and the gold costing $1,155, they are incredible pieces. They are expected to ship from January to March 2023.
The sculpting was done by Mufizal Mokhtar and illustrated by Alan Quah and they really do bring Frank Miller’s vision of Superman to prestigious metal art. The display stand features ruined Earth and a pop-up backdrop of 3D panels from the graphic novel itself featuring Superman’s most famous scenes.
The pewter and composite resin art are so well defined with the creases of the suit being illustrated as if it was high definition. Both statues are 28 cm tall and pre-orders are being taken from their website now.
