Sean Murphy has been heading his unique Elseworlds Batman story ‘White Knight’ since 2017 in what now is affectionately called the “Murphy-verse”. The most recent limited series, ‘Batman: Beyond The White Knight’ will be the first to feature Superman as Murphy as confirmed with a reveal of the cover of the eighth and final issue.
‘Batman: Beyond The White Knight’ includes elements from Batman: Beyond like Neo Gotham City and Terry McGinnis, while including the ageing rivalry of Batman and Jack Napier. This series focuses on his and Terry’s efforts to keep Wayne Enterprise from falling into the hands of the supervillain Blight.
Superman’s role in the story has yet to be revealed, but the dynamic between the two seems to be like The Dark Knight Returns with an older Batman and an ageless Superman. Murphy illustrates the series in addition to writing it, and his Superman costume is simplicity defined. The trunks are there, but the belt is a yellow strip. He has a noticeable collar and cape clamps just under his shoulders. As is usually the case with Batman and Superman comic covers he is the bright contrast to the overall dark setting.
The inclusion of the Man of Steel in the Murphy-verse may be a big indication of what direction the overall universe may take. Until now, it’s largely been a Batman story that holds up strongly as a standalone story for anyone even a little familiar with the characters.
Batman: Beyond The Dark Knight #8 will be released on February 14th.
