The New Zealand Mint have teamed up with DC Comics to release three Superman 85th Anniversary Coins. The anniversary celebrates 85 years since his appearance in Action Comics #1 in 1938 and is an all-year round celebration at DC.
New Zealand Mint have now begun pre-orders for a special edition coins commemorating the decades and decades of the Man of Steel. There are several options available which are set for different price ranges; a 1oz Silver coin, a 3oz Silver coin and 1/4oz Gold coin. Here’s a look at the coins:
Each coin is engraved on the head and tail. The head features an engraving of Superman with the cape, insignia, and split curl as he flies into action and the 85th-anniversary commemoration. Coming out of New Zealand, the tail is engraved with the official Public Seal of Niue which shows it uses the legal two-dollar coin. The box it comes in is also a collector item in itself with its Jim Lee-esque art and official DC branding.
Prices for these Superman 85th Anniversary Coins start at $109.00 for the Silver 1oz, $299.00 for the 3oz and $800.00 for the 1/4oz Gold. The silver coins are limited to 1,938 pieces (the year Action Comics #1 was released) and the gold ones are limited to just 200 worldwide.
