REVIEW: Justice League Unlimited #2
Justice League Unlimited #2 continues the excellent introduction to this brand new series! I loved the first issue, it was near perfect and this issue is no exception as Mark Waid continues his story.
But before we get into the issue itself, let’s take a look at the covers. The standard issue is by Dan Mora and is somewhat terrifying! Seeing these Parademon’s draw blood from Superman in such a way is not what I would expect, but with that said, it is a phenomenal cover that highlights the threat they are up against. There is a lot going on in this issue, so much so that the more times you look at the cover, the more you see.
Ariel Colón’s variant is incredibly photorealistic, but it also has a hint of animation within it and somehow feels like something out of Robot Chicken or similar. That is not a bad thing at all, I love it and Colón really haws a way of bringing these characters to life and I adore the classic designs that they don here as they leap from the Watchtower. My only question is… how on Earth is Batman doing that?!
The variant by Mike Deodato Jr is another great piece which sees our heroes in the middle of action agains the Parademons! I really love this piece, it is triumphant and the detail is fantastic, specifically hen it comes to the cape positioning! It’s always great to see the Trinity fighting side by side.
There are also some great variants available which are by Simone Di Meo, Derrick Chew, Fico Ossio, ,Dave Wilkins and Lucas Meyer.
Justice League Unlimited #2 opens up with a key member being dragged into the shadows, that was one hell of an opening and really showcased the horror element of what we are dealing with. As someone who loves a horror film and superheroes of course, this is very welcome. The two teams that were previously split in the last issue come together to save the children that these so called Parademons have been taking, but the real question is.. what are these things? Darkseid has been annihilated in a previous series which is highlighted in this issue, but also, these aren’t the usual Parademons that we have seen before.
Wonder Woman and Mary Marvel attempt to clear the eggs from the forest, but are taken by surprise as they and we as the reader gets closer to an explanation on what these things are and they aren’t as mindless as the Justice League thought. Following Amanda Waller and her Amazos taking the powers from heroes, it isn’t going as smoothly as they intended in terms of restoring them and takes a bit of experimentation. I like that it links to that story arc so closely, and it does so seamlessly and also gives opportunity to try something new with the heroes that were affected. We also see just how many of the hard hitters of the Justice League were truly affected by their loss of power, one of which is focused on in this issue and his actions are very unlike him, so much so that the league are worried and I have a feeling this is quite an important aspect of this story arc.
The interior art is by Dan Mora, with colours by Tamra Bonvillain, and letters by Ariana Maher. Mora and Bonvillain are a match made in heaven with their artwork, every single page, every single panel is spectacular. No detail is ever spared and with so much going on in this issue and so many characters in particular covered, it is seriously impressive. Dan Mora has quickly worked his way up to be one of the best comic book artist
(9/10) Justice League Unlimited #2 is another excellent issue that really progresses this story and shows us how dangerous these Parademons in particular are! I thought I was all “Waided out” with writer Mark Waid also currently on Action and also Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, but this is something special.
