Secret Six #3, “In the Club” dives right into the intrigue of the story. There’s more at stake than just Waller’s whereabouts as at least one spy organization resurfaces within the DCU. This unlikely group of characters will need to come together as a team if anything positive is going to be achieved.

The standard cover is by Stephen Segovia and Rain Beredo. Seemingly unaware of the danger they’re all in, the younger members of this new Secret Six dance it up. Looking way too carefree than they are inside the issue, the theme of being unaware of what they’re getting into isn’t too far off the mark.

REVIEW: Secret Six #3

Ariel Olivetti’s variant highlights the romantic turmoil between Jon and Jay that’s been building since issue #1. These two have not been seeing eye-to-eye much lately and it may prove too much for their relationship.

The variant by Leirix is a bit of a fan service image with Catman enjoying a hot tub surrounded by a few of his feline friends. It seems a little strange for him to keep his cowl on, but maybe it’s for the cat’s benefit? Either way, it’s the type of fun cover Leirix is known for.

REVIEW: Secret Six #3

Stephen Segovia and Colorist Rain Beredo continue with the interior art. Along with the playful outfit designs the team gets to blend in, the issue is simply alive with color. The vibrancy doesn’t undermine the espionage-esque tension which heightens the visual enjoyment of this issue. There may be a lot of dialogue and intrigue but the few action sequences are high quality and feel organic to the story. All in all, Segovia and Beredo are proving they’re the perfect team for this series.

Nicole Maines, lettered by Steve Wands, crafts a satisfying take on a modern surveillance scene from most spy movies. There’s still plenty of tension within this “team” and it’s fascinating to see Jon mixed up in the whole scenario. His moral philosophy is definitely being put to task and it will be interesting how this experience will affect the future Superman going forward. Even if this Secret Six is grasping at leads, it turns out Checkmate is operational again and our “heroes” have stumbled upon more than they bargained. We may be half way through, but this story still has plenty of surprises it could spring on us as it plays out.

(8/10) Secret Six #3 really hooked me. The character interactions felt more compelling and the way the issue plays out was incredibly fun. I really think this story is going to have a big impact on the greater DCU when it’s over and I’m excited to see what that is.
