James Gunn Reveals Budget For ‘Superman’ Along With More Details
July 11th is fast approaching and the buzz around the debut of ‘Superman’ is starting to ramp up. Especially with James Gunn’s recent Instagram announcement that the film is 100% finished there’s been several interesting tidbits and analytical information brought to light.
One of the more fascinating reports is the film coming in at a $225 million budget. As a bit of fun trivia, that’s the same budget “Man of Steel” reported for its production. Obviously this makes it a bigger budget movie in comparison to more recent films of the genre but is considerably modest when placed against something like the “Avengers” franchise. While there’s many factors that play into the cost of any film, special effects can be a major contribution. James Gunn opted for a more practical approach with ‘Superman’ that includes building the Fortress robots as actual automatons programmed off their actors’ movements. That sense of realism should help the fantastical nature of any superhero film and the work to create them was probably more expensive than a CGI model.

The new movie’s runtime has also been revealed at 2 hours and 9 minutes. James Gunn has always strived to give his audiences quality over quantity by keeping his movies a reasonable length. His ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ sequels are his longest films and they still don’t quite make it to 2 hours and 30 minutes. Even with the confirmed after credits scene (Supergirl appearance?), a 2 hour runtime makes the movie approachable by most ages viewing enjoyment. It also makes rewatching the movie more likely whether in theaters or later at home.
There’s also a special treat for ‘Smallville’ fans as longtime friend of James Gunn, Michael Rosenbaum, is set to make an extended cameo appearance. What his role will be falls more into the Easter Egg category as of now, but it’s always fun to have previous Superman associated actors connected to current projects. Rosenbaum is well known for his role as Lex Luthor in the long running series but has also had a successful voice acting career so which aspect of his acting talents will be showcased in ‘Superman’ is unknown.

More TV spots with clips and scenes we haven’t gotten to see are sure to pop up as we countdown to the premiere. The hype and marketing for ‘Superman’ has seemed to hit a positive cord and has us all wishing July 11th would get here sooner.
