REVIEW: Superman Treasury 2025: Hero For All #1
This is it! It’s here! The best Superman comic of the year with everything a fan can ask for and any fan can pick up and read with any level of love or knowledge for the character. Superman Treasury 2025: Hero For All also has all the tropes and elements that make Superman stories so great in the post-Crisis age thanks to one of the best Man of Steel writers and artists out there – Dan Jurgens.
This issue also has one of the best modern artists over at DC, multiple Eisner winner Bruno Redondo. Naturally for this issue, he’s doing the classic Superman flying over planet Earth, reminding us that it isn’t just Metropolis but everything that is under his watch. With zero gravity, the cape also spreads like wings. This is an image that can go on anything as well.

Dan Jurgens graces us with a variant also set above the planet. Here, as Superman defends against an attack, he keeps everyone he knows in Metropolis in mind – even Lex Luthor by the look of it. Your favorite Daily Planet staff member or Metropolis civilian can be spotted. Jurgens’ Superman continues to have that classic post-Crisis feel that carried him throughout the 90s and into the 2000s.

Scott Koblish also gives us a character collage for his variant cover but expands it the rest of the DC Universe -from the current cast of Action Comics to different multiversal variants of Superman. Of course, you have the Justice League, other heroes, and the supporting Superman cast. Koblish had a really fun, illuminated art style that thrives on bright colors and this cover is definitely one of his finest pieces.

It’s Superman week with the DC Studios film releasing after years of anticipation. The fourth variant is the theatrical poster, sure to be a historic promotional cover in the years to come.

Set towards the end of DC Rebirth, Superman thwarts a giant robot attack on Metropolis as Ma and Pa Kent take Jon to safety. While he defeats it with ease, it very much feels like the first stage of a full-scale attack on Earth – Lex Luthor actually agrees with him, having not been behind it. Superman heads into space to get to the bottom of it. We are then seemingly brought back into a past retelling of Clark’s life as if he weren’t Superman. These excerpts are interluded with what’s happening back on Earth.
It’s not great. Within minutes, the Justice League Watchtower is destroyed by an alien fleet with starships the size of cities. While Clark Kent navigates a career in Metropolis with the help of his childhood friend he never lost, Lex, the situation escalates to something too great for the Justice League as heroes all around unite against the invaders. Not since Darkseid has an invasion ever been this devastating. While the world waits and wonders for Superman, heroes go into crisis management. When at last that invader is revealed, it’s the triumphant return of a forgotten, yet significant, Superman rogue.
Dan Jurgens is one of the top Superman creators out there. His post-Crisis Superman stories were always about a Man of Steel who was more man than super. He’s shown to have limits this time around, which makes it all the more rewarding when he breaks them like superheroes do. This kept Superman appealing to audiences in the 90s and going into the 2000s. Because of that, Jurgens excels in a DC Universe where Superman can grow and develop as a human with a family. When DC Rebirth came around in 2016, this was a chance to add to that Superman canon. Superman Treasury 2025 feels like a continuation from that time in the DC Universe. Clark’s human life is further explored here in a what-if story of what could be gained but also lost a staple in some of the best Superman stories like “What Do You Get The Man Who Has Everything?” Another staple of great Superman stories is the threat transcending Metropolis and into Justice League territory and it’s too much for them like in “Last Son” and “Death of Superman.” Because of that, the last pages will have you cheering. Letters are by Dave Sharpe.
Bruno Redondo’s art is stellar with tons of locations, characters, and action to work with. When Green Arrow and Black Canary are first shown in the Watchtower, you know that whatever is about to happen is going to be a real problem. It’s also sweet to see him back on characters like Nightwing and other members of the Batfamily after his Eisner-winning run on the Nightwing series. The high-flying fights in Metropolis do not disappoint either. Jurgens, with inkers Brett Breeding and Caio Filipe, also has a couple of pages towards the end that aren’t just part of the story but a visual tribute to the life of Superman. Colors are by Adriano Lucas.
This special Superman one-shot also includes bonus images and insider information about DC Studios’ Superman coming out this week.
