With Superman now soaring in theaters across the globe, audiences are already falling in love with the film’s most surprising scene-stealer: Krypto the Superdog. The fan-favorite canine companion of the Man of Steel will officially take center stage this fall in a brand-new series of DCU short films.

In an exciting reveal shared by ComicBook, writer-director James Gunn confirmed that Krypto—voiced by the lovable chaos inspired by Gunn’s real-life rescue pup Ozu—will be featured in four family-friendly short films, marking a major next step in the rebooted DC Universe.

“We’ve got these cool little Krypto shorts that are so fun, man,” Gunn shared. “He’s a terrible, terrible dog. It’s for families and it’s just really fun and goofy. It’s pretty cool.”

DC Studios co-head Peter Safran echoed that sentiment, saying, “It’s definitely the Krypto you fall in love with in Superman. He’s a terrible dog.”

Audiences already familiar with the new Superman film—directed by Gunn and featuring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane—know that Krypto brings heart, humor, and chaos to the screen in a way no other super pet can. His presence adds both levity and depth to Clark Kent’s personal life in the film, expanding the emotional range of the DCU’s hopeful new era.

While specific details about the short films’ plots remain under wraps, Gunn revealed that they’ve already been produced and watched internally. Though it’s not yet known whether Corenswet or other Superman cast members will appear or lend their voices to the shorts, fans can expect the same quirky and mischievous tone that’s quickly made Krypto a standout character.

Gunn has been candid about the personal inspiration behind Krypto. In a heartfelt Instagram post earlier this year, he wrote:

“Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic, to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life.”

In a poetic nod to Krypto’s impact, Gunn is using Ozu’s transformation as a reminder of how rescue animals can change lives. Today, Ozu is “fairly often, a very good boy”—a sentiment that reflects Krypto’s own arc in the film and upcoming shorts.

The first Krypto short is expected to release this fall, in September, according to DCU Brief, and air on HBO Max, offering more light-hearted DCU content for fans of all ages. Whether you’re a longtime Superman aficionado or new to the world of Krypton’s last son, Krypto promises to bring laughter, heart, and a little bit of destruction—just the way James Gunn intended.
