‘Superman’ Takes Flight on HBO Max This Friday, September 19
DC Studios, like Krypto the Superdog, is officially bringing Superman home. Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that James Gunn’s Superman—the first feature in the new DC Universe (DCU)—will be available to stream exclusively on HBO Max beginning Friday, September 19, 2025.
The announcement comes after Superman soared at the summer box office, earning an impressive $615 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing comic book movie of the year so far. Originally released in theaters on July 11, the film launched a bold new era for DC Studios under co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran, serving as the first official chapter in the studio’s Gods and Monsters storytelling slate.

With David Corenswet, who joined James Gunn Tuesday morning in announcing the movie’s soon streaming arrival, donning the cape as the new Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan stepping into the iconic role of Lois Lane, this film marks a fresh, yet faithful, reintroduction of the Man of Steel for a modern audience.
“Superman” officially restarts the DC Universe and features a dynamic, star-studded ensemble including Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern (Guy Gardner), Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent (Pa Kent), Neva Howell as Martha Kent (Ma Kent), Bradley Cooper as Jor-El, and Alan Tudyk as Superman’s quirky sidekick Robot #4—later nicknamed “Gary.” Additionally, Milly Alcock makes a special appearance as Supergirl, hinting at the expanding scope of the new DCU.
The film blends heart, heroism, and a cinematic sense of hope—hallmarks of the Superman legacy—while planting seeds for the DCU’s interconnected future. Superman becomes the first theatrical DCU release to arrive on HBO Max under this new continuity. The film’s arrival signals a broader rollout of DCU content set to follow, including upcoming features and streaming series.
Written and directed by James Gunn, the film kicks off a unified cinematic timeline that will connect DC’s theatrical and streaming projects moving forward. Upcoming titles in the Gods and Monsters chapter include The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and multiple television series. Gunn has described Superman as the beating heart of this new world—anchoring the DCU with a character who embodies truth, justice, and genuine hope.
You can stream ‘Superman’ on HBO Max from Friday 19th September.
