A Super-Sneak Peek at Superman/Spider-Man #1

After 49 years, everyone’s favorite pair of red and blue superheroes will be brought  together once again in the long awaited Superman/Spider-Man Issue #1, swinging onto shelves on March 25th. For those of you itching to know more about this epic issue, don’t worry, as we have a few new glimpses given to us by the hardworking Jorge Jimenez, the artist helping bring these two iconic inked characters to life.

Before we get to the most recent image posted by Jorge, let’s spin the earth back to February 16th, where on Jorge’s instagram profile, he shared a three panel image with the caption “H O P E waiting in the sky….:) DC’s Superman/Spider-Man FOC to pre-order 2 Mar, don’t forget to get yours, my friends! On sale next month!!”. It features what looks to be Peter Parker and Clark Kent ditching their mild mannered attire and slipping into something more heroic (and comfortable). Even without context, we get a perfect display of their similarities and differences. While they’re both answering the call to justice, Superman, with little struggle, sheds his street clothes and blasts off like into the clouds within seconds. Meanwhile, Spider-Man, being the relatable every-man that he is, falls behind due to his pesky Parker luck, as he awkwardly tries to shake off his shoes trying to suit up. However, in the bottom panel, we see Spider-Man thwip his webshooters into the sky, preparing to propel himself to join big blue. This small sequence alone shows how much of an understanding Brad Meltzer and Pepe Larraz have when it comes to both the web-head and the man of steel. Jorge’s art, of course, is as sensational as always, giving us readers vivid imagery with a great sense of momentum and style.

Now, to slingshot ourselves back to the present, Jorge shared today another image giving us our first look at Peter Parker and Clark Kent strolling into S.T.A.R Labs to get the latest scoop. In the caption, Jorge says “ My first Peter Parker drawn in a comic ever, and to have it alongside my great friend Clark Kent..well you can imagine how much I’m enjoying all this:)”. As a massive fan of both the wall-crawler and as a Spidey impersonator, I gotta say Jorge nailed it. From the 1970’s hair fangs to the unassuming build and stature, Peter’s looking the way I imagined him. Simply Spectacular.

This little marvelous morsel of detail does give us some clues as to what might be taking place in the story. We do know from the story synopsis that Supes and Spidey will be duking it out against the devious Norman Osborn and Lex Luthor. Does Lex Luthor or Norman Osborn buy Star Labs, possibly collaborating on technology powerful enough to put these two heroes down for good? Or are Clark and Peter simply  reasonably suspicious of two problematic billionaires who’ve done nothing but terrorize them their whole lives just so happening to be getting chummy? Nobody knows for sure. But one thing is certain, this one-shot comic is bound to be a super-amazing read, igniting both excitement in seasoned comic readers, and newcomers alike.

DC’s Superman/Spider-Man #1 is out on 25th March and is available to pre-order right now from your local comic shop.
