REVIEW: DC/Marvel – Supergirl/Blade #1

0

Supergirl/Blade #1 brings us the crossover we never expected, but didn’t know we needed. As someone who adores vampires, and Superheroes of course, it was inevitable that I would love this and it came as a very unexpected suprise.

But before we go into the issue itself, let’s take a look at the cover. The cover is by Mikel Janín and perfectly captures the entire issue without giving too much away. The detail is really great here and the composition really makes the issue feel exciting. I’ve always been a fan of Mikel Janín’s take on characters I love, and this one is no exception.

DC/Marvel - Supergirl/Blade #1

Supergirl/Blade #1 kicks off with Mojo putting together some sort of scenario that is fuelled by his ‘algorithm’. As we see his plans start to come together, Supergirl finds herself awakening in an unusual place, but it isn’t quite that simple – she has kryptonite poisoning that leaves her almost powerless. As she comes to senses she is greeted by some Vampires, but not just the you’d expect to see and we instantly get a sense of what this dynamic is going to be like as he instantly strikes for the kill. As their location is revealed to be some sort of stage, Mojo reveals himself and declares them as his ‘actors’. With Supergirl weakened and his threats being serious, the pair have no choice but to go long with it, but they have something up their sleeves, (or should I say collar) something that involves a bite… but is it for infection or for cure?

This issue has a great use of characters and has some great action even just in the first few pages and the dynamic between the two characters is just perfect. We get some really humorous moments between the pair, especially with Blades bluntness and also from the villain Mojo. Despite the characters being TOTALLY difference, we get plenty of opportunity to see each of them shine. Writer CRC Payne and team have really knocked it out of the park for this issue and leaves you wanting more from this unexpected but brilliant duo.

The interior artwork is by Mikel Janín, Hugo Petrus, Marcelo Maiolo and letters by Pat Brosseau. The artwork is great! It’s a prefect style and mix for both characters whether superhero or vampire and I think that’s a hard balance to get right. Whilst the atmosphere and some aspects have plenty of detail, I’m actually a sucker for the few bright, vibrant and classic comic art moments that we see peppered throughout the issue.

(8/10) Whilst Supergirl/Blade #1 was way too short, I really enjoyed seeing this pair together and honestly, I hope it’s something we get to see in the future. Despite their differences they made an excellent team, but as I said, my only negative about this issue was regarding its length.
