The DC Universe just added another fascinating piece to its growing puzzle. According to multiple entertainment outlets, beloved actor Matthew Lillard has officially joined the cast of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. While DC Studios is still keeping his role tightly under wraps, that hasn’t stopped fans from immediately launching into speculation about who he could be playing in the rapidly expanding DCU.

Lillard has built a legendary career playing eccentric, unpredictable and unforgettable characters. Whether audiences know him as Stu Macher from Scream, Shaggy from the live-action Scooby-Doo films or William Afton from Five Nights at Freddy’s, there’s always been something electric about his performances. He brings chaos, charm, comedy and emotional depth all at once — the kind of screen presence that instantly makes scenes more entertaining. Now he’s bringing that same energy into James Gunn’s DC Universe.

What makes the casting even more interesting is the long history between Gunn and Lillard. Before Gunn became the architect of the new DCU, he wrote the live-action Scooby-Doo movies that helped turn Lillard’s version of Shaggy into one of the most beloved live-action cartoon performances ever. Their creative relationship goes back years, making this reunion feel less random and more like something that was always meant to happen. Of course, the internet immediately began throwing out one major theory: Plastic Man.

Fans quickly connected the dots after old comments resurfaced revealing that Gunn and Lillard once discussed a Plastic Man project years ago. Suddenly, comic book fans everywhere started wondering if Gunn may finally be bringing the stretchy, shape-shifting hero into the DCU. Plastic Man (Patrick “Eel” O’Brian) is one of DC’s weirdest and most entertaining characters — a wisecracking former criminal capable of transforming his body into virtually anything imaginable. The character requires someone who can balance comedy, heart and complete unpredictability without feeling forced. That sounds exactly like Matthew Lillard. Whether the speculation turns out to be true or not, his addition instantly adds even more personality to a movie that already sounds massive in scope.

Man of Tomorrow is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious Superman films ever attempted. James Gunn is writing and directing the movie, which once again stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. But this isn’t just another “Superman versus Lex” story. The film is expected to dive deep into the cosmic side of DC mythology with Brainiac officially serving as the movie’s primary villain. German actor Lars Eidinger has reportedly been cast as the iconic Superman foe, marking the live-action theatrical debut of one of the Man of Steel’s most dangerous enemies.

The movie is also expected to continue expanding the interconnected DC Universe James Gunn has been building, with characters like Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific and John Stewart’s Green Lantern helping establish a larger world beyond Metropolis.

‘Man Of Tomorrow’ is set for release on 9th July 2027.
