‘Superman: Father Of Tomorrow’ is the upcoming comic series by Kenny Porter and Danny Earls. To celebrate its release next week, Artist Danny Earls release a first look and a great deep dive into some of the design files which helped them settle on the look and feel of the book and its characters.

In a social media post on Instagram, Danny Earls posted the below images with a description of how the process went. Personally I love when creators do this, it really explains their rationale and also gives readers and fans great insight into how these characters look and operate.

When we were designing a brand new Superman for this book we thought about him being Jor-El and not Kal-El. We really wanted him to be more regal, mature and confident!

With him being a scientist and that being a major focal point in our book, we decided to give him what looks like a lab coat. I really wanted to draw a cape so we blended a coat and a cape with tassles in the front. We thought this represented a strong almost Roman, God-like figure! The cape attaches just under the S symbol at the front, so it never loses the shape of that lab coat we decided on.

For the scientist/lab outfit I wanted to tap into the genius designs of Syd Meads Tron and give him lines and shapes that accentuate his physique. We kept the theme of the tassels in the front even in the lab outift to link everything together. He wears different technology throughout the comic book, all featuring buttons, levers and knobs. Nothing in this book resembles technology we see in out world today. It’s all tactile and needs to be interacted with to work. A retro uturistic look, like what the future would look like according to the 1970s!

And lastly, we locked in on the black and white colourway! It’s a strong colour set that let me play with the silhouette and shape of Jor-El in really fun ways throughout the book!

For those excited for ‘Superman: Father Of Tomorrow’, it is set to release on 27th May 2026 and is available to pre-order right now from your local comic shop.
