Brightburn teased a sequel and it was a great film I thought. It was an unusual horrifying twist on an already known and established story, and I loved that. What if someone who had incredible power was bad instead of good? I’m actually surprised that it hadn’t been done before. It’s not often we get to see this, and this film tended to feature a LOT of the Superman background, like I said – with a twist. I really enjoyed it, don’t get me wrong I love Superman and everything he stands for, but sometimes it’s nice to see something a little different.
For those that have seen Brightburn, know that there was a HUGE introduction right at the end of the film – talk about a cliffhanger – and now according to “We Got This Covered” there are even talks of a sequel. The film wasn’t unsuccessful, but at the same time it wasn’t huge – making $30 million from a budget of $6 million – I’d say that was pretty impressive.
The film did get a lot of hate, saying that it was a stupid idea and unnecessary, but it also got a lot of praise, and I think the connection to Superman helped that a little bit. According to the site, a fan asked James Gunn on Instagram if there would be a follow up, to which he replied with:
“I think I’m tied up for the next few years with Suicide Squad and The Guardians, but we’re talking about the sequel.”
Now, I mentioned the ending of the film, did anyone else stay for the mid credit scene? Spoiler alert: it shows characters extremely similar to the Justice League, but of course…. Bad! I think it would be a huge shame to just leave it there, there are so many backgrounds to explore with their stories, and there are also bits still to explore with Brightburn. Just like Brightburn has been attached to Superman and even Ultraman, could we get to explore something like the Justice League of Earth-3? Otherwise known and The Crime Syndicate.
I truly hope this sequel happens, I think it would be make a great film franchise.
