REVIEW: Dark Knights Of Steel #3
Dark Knights Of Steel #3 is yet another incredible issue full of action, excellent shock factor and badass takes on iconic characters. I really love this series already, not only does it have sensational writing, it has the artwork to match.
Dark Knights Of Steel #3 is finally here and it has been a fantastic and explosive series so far! It’s safe to say that Tom Taylor is absolutely killing it right now, especially with two simultaneous series on the go!
Bu before we get into the issue itself, let’s take a look at the covers. The standard cover is by Yasmine Putri and is another excellent cover to portray the events and key characters of the issue. The detail is incredible and it really reminds me of a stained glass window, teasing the story for readers.
The first variant cover is again by interior artist Yasmine Putri and features yet another character in the classic ‘Top Trump’ style. It’s great to see where these slightly altered characters sit with one another in terms of skills. Not only that but it gives us another excellent look at Wonder Woman’s look for the series, which is badass I have to say!
The second variant is by Joshua Middleton and it is GORGEOUS. It goes without saying, this is my favourite variant of #3 and is already a top contender for cover of the year 2022! The detail is insane and I love the suit that Superman is wearing. The way that his cape flows in such a vibrant red is just stunning, this is an excellent cover.
Dark Knights Of Steel #3 starts with the landing of a mysterious falling star, as both Kingdoms fight to be the first to get there so that they can claim whatever has landed. First of all I adored the cameo from Jimmy Olsen, again this is another character who has been spun into this era perfectly and that is exactly how I’d imagine him in these times.
We also get a deeper look at Amazon Island and its inhabitants as they get a surprise visit from King Jefferson. I love how fearless these warriors are, instantly putting a blade to the throat of a King simply because he dares to step foot on their shores is the kind of badassery I love to see.
During the meeting Wonder Woman and Queen Hippolyta gets information on what happened across shores and who is responsible. I love how she instantly defends the perpetrator despite not knowing the full story, this moment just goes to show the faith that she has in this person and sadly it has been misplaced.
The showdown between Wonder Woman and King Jefferson is phenomenal and is showcased with fantastic artwork by Yasmine Putri. The electricity radiating from Jefferson and the light from the candle shining upon Wonder Woman is excellent, as is her reaction. It’s safe to say that Tom Taylor knows exactly how to handle this character and I can’t wait to see more of her.
Tom Taylor also knows how to kill off a whole bunch of characters that’s for sure, as each issue so far has ended up with at least one death. The same theme can be found in his DCEASED work, not only that but he knows exactly how to keep readers intrigued, that can be said for to Batman’s sudden reaction to the star, which proves the stories Jor-El told him in the first issue are true.
Yasmine Putri’s artwork is sensational in this issue yet again. The action sequences, especially when it comes to Supergirl and King Jefferson were just stunning, brutal and quick, you really get a sense of the speed that she is moving at in these scenes and that’s thanks to the artwork by Putri.
Each page of this issue is stunning, the detail is always there and is extremely consistent. The same can be said for the incredible and realistic colours by Arif Prianto. Their work together really takes you to this moment and time and it just feels magical.
