DC Reveals ‘Death Of Superman’ 30th Anniversary Special
The Death Of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 are on sale on 8th November. Not only that but Superman #75 and The Death Of Superman will both receive specials and collected editions which are on sale 1st November and 6th December.
The Death Of Superman is one of the most iconic Superman story arcs (if not THE most), and this year it celebrates its 30th anniversary.
To celebrate, DC Comics are releasing an 80-page The Death Of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1. The special sees the original creative teams behind the original reunite for four brand new stories, one of which introduces a brand new villain named ‘DOOMBREAKER’. That creative team includes Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, Roger Stern, Butch Guice, Louise Simonson, Jon Bogdanove, Jerry Ordway and Tom Grummett.
The new stories explore the lasting impact that Clark’s death had on his family and those around him, which I think is a great idea and a great way to bring new stories that tie into that iconic story arc. With such a monumental celebration, of course comes numerous variant covers from some of the biggest artists in comics, nine of them in fact. Here is the first, which is a gatefold main cover by Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding.
Here is a brief synopsis of each of those stories along with the creative teams behind them:
- “The Life of Superman” by Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, Brad Anderson and John Workman – A young Jon Kent finds out in school that his dad had died years earlier, as his parents never told him about that fateful day. In the midst of dealing with this emotional news, Jon and Clark need to team up to fight a new villain connected to Doomsday called DOOMBREAKER.
- “Standing Guard” by Roger Stern, Butch Guice, Glenn Whitmore and Rob Leigh – The epic battle between Superman and Doomsday from the Guardians’ perspective.
- “Time” by Louise Simonson, Jon Bogdanove, Glenn Whitmore and Rob Leigh – The story of how the death of Superman looked from John Henry Irons’s perspective.
- “Above and Beyond” by Jerry Ordway, Tom Grummett, Doug Hazlewood, Glenn Whitmore and Rob Leigh – A powerful story of Ma and Pa Kent watching their son fight Doomsday live on television and going through Clark’s photo albums with the feeling that their son always prevails.
Here’s a sneak peak of some of the pages from the new four new stories:
The Death Of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 includes variant covers by the following artists: Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Dan Mora, Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, Francesco Mattina, Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, Jamal Campbell, Lee Weeks, Clay Mann, Fabio Moon, Walter Simonson, Bill Sienkiewicz, Gabriell Rodriguez and more. As well as the variants, there is also a premium polybag variant featuring a black armband which is very reminiscent of the original release. Here’s a look at some the variant covers we can expect:
