Mary Holland Joins DC’s Jimmy Olsen ‘Superman’ Spinoff as Female Lead

Mary Holland has joined DC Studios’ developing Superman spinoff series centered around Jimmy Olsen, adding another major player to a project that already promises crime, comedy and one of the wildest villains in the DC Universe.

According to Deadline, Holland will serve as the show’s female lead and play a character named Sandra. Additional details surrounding Sandra—including whether she is a Daily Planet employee, an investigator or someone connected to Gorilla Grodd—are currently being kept under wraps. Holland is known for her work in Ghosts and the upcoming Little House on the Prairie series. The still-untitled HBO Max series has previously been referred to in reports as DC Crime, but that title has not been officially confirmed. The show is expected to follow Jimmy and other Daily Planet journalists as they investigate stories involving metahumans and supervillains. Its first season will reportedly unfold like a true-crime documentary focused on Gorilla Grodd, giving the growing DC Universe an opportunity to combine investigative journalism, superhero action and mockumentary-style comedy.

The series is being developed by American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, who are expected to write, showrun and executive produce. DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are also attached as executive producers. The known cast so far includes Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Tatro as Gorilla Grodd and Holland as Sandra. No other members of Superman’s Daily Planet team have officially joined the series. However, the premise leaves the door wide open for familiar faces such as Perry White, Steve Lombard, Cat Grant and other members of the Metropolis newsroom to appear. Jimmy Olsen has always been more than Superman’s best pal. He is fearless, curious and somehow finds himself in the middle of the DC Universe’s most unbelievable situations. Putting him on the trail of Gorilla Grodd is strange, ambitious and completely fitting for a character whose comic-book history has never been afraid to embrace the extraordinary.

With Holland now joining Gisondo and Tatro, this Superman spinoff is steadily becoming one of DC Studios’ most intriguing developing projects. A premiere date has not been announced, but Jimmy Olsen’s next big story is clearly beginning to take shape.
