REVIEW: Superman & Lois S2 Ep 1: What Lies Beneath
Superman & Lois S2 Ep 1 is an epic opening to a series with emotional acting and insane visuals. This episode introduced us to tense relationships, new relationships and a fantastic villain reveal which has blown my mind.
Superman & Lois S2 Ep 1 is back with a bang and my god, I am so glad it is back. This show has gone from strength to strength and series 2 is off to an excellent start.
This episode picked up right where we left off with a very emotional reunion between John Henry Irons and his daughter Natalie. From the get go it’s clear there is some tension in quite a few relationships featured in this series, but worst of all for Lois and Clark. As well as this it also acted as an introduction to several new relationships too. the most significant being that between Superman & General Anderson.
We are introduced (sort of) to some new super characters, who I am very eager to find out more about. But not only that, after Smallville is subject to several unexplained earthquakes at the start of the episode we get to see why at the very end. Now I have to say so far this is the most comic book accurate introduction to a villain and it so far has the most accurate look of the villain. I am very surprised by this revelation but I’m looking forward to seeing how to pans out.
I love that we are getting to experience Jordan’s powers along with him, it makes him more relatable as a character and allows viewers to have a growing bond with him which works perfectly. This episode has some really great family moments which is one of the reasons that I love this show. I adore seeing Superman/Clark Kent as a typical cheesy dad and that’s something I’d love to see more of in this series.
It’s safe to say that absolutely nothing has floundered in this series, in fact everything has improved. The acting is spectacular throughout, though I was particularly impressed with Elizabeth Tulloch/Lois Lane who displayed tonnes of raw emotion in this episode.
The special effects were mind-blowing in this episode too, there were many moments where I genuinely thought I was watching a big budget Hollywood film. We got an excellent display of ice breath and several exciting flights. It’s safe to say I was very impressed and I hope this level of quality continues.
The tone too continues to remain realistic and slightly dark, which I sam very happy about. Whilst this show has its hopeful scenes and occasional cheesy moments it’s all in good measure. It really works. The score really helps with that, as it showcases the triumphant moments that Superman has perfectly.
