REVIEW: My Adventures With Superman S1 Ep 5: “You’ll Believe A Man Can Lie”
“You’ll Believe a Man Can Lie” keeps the new villains coming and more so continues the main story that began in the first two episodes which makes this episode an essential entry in the series.
My Adventures With Superman S1 Ep 5 sees both Clark and Lois get the answers they have thus far been searching for and the truth really hurts in this week’s episode. The search for the mysterious tech and Superman’s identity put everyone in a difficult situation and divides our group of protagonists. The main threat also rears its head as the battle for Metropolis’ safety heats up (pun intended with the new villain of the week).
Superman (Jack Quaid) is one busy hero as all of Metropolis has come to accept his assistance even with the little things. Lois (Alice Lee) is at the point where every Lois in the multiverse comes to when they have reasonable doubt that the coworker that she has been crushing on may be Superman. All that there is to do now is confront him on it and confirm her suspicions. Meanwhile, Jimmy (Ishmel Sahid) is planning the group’s Big Foot hunt but is put on an “assignment” with Steve Lombard (Vincent Tong).
The issue is that Lois first has to catch Superman as he blips around the city helping people. He gets a tip on more advanced tech in the hands of a reimagined Heatwave (Laila Berzins) and her gang. However, someone or something already beat him to the punch and has the criminals running scared. What begins as a simple apprehension, turns into an ambush that the budding Man of Steel isn’t quite ready for.
Again, Lois is at the point where she obviously knows that Clark is Superman. Literally, everything he does seems obvious now that she is looking at it. That’s always been the genius of Clark Kent, it’s not a sight thing but a psychology thing. If that’s the case, how will she respond to her friend keeping such a secret from her? Especially after putting her off for so long when she pressed him about it.
It’s Jimmy and Steve that go on a journalistic adventure in this episode. You really need to feel bad for Jimmy here as he tries to keep his beloved friend group together while begrudgingly going out on an assignment with him. However, there’s more to Steve than meets the eye with Jimmy and his online new persona Flamebird, which doubles as a sweet and subtle Action Comics reference. But as it would turn out, an adventure with Jimmy is just beginning by the end of the episode.
Of course, that’s a highlight – the end and last act of the episode when Superman comes face to face with the true masterminds after confronting Heatwave. While two of their identities are clear, one man still has yet to be revealed. However, some fans may already have an idea of who he is. After all, the Superman lexicon wouldn’t be complete without him. In the meantime, it’s a classical smackdown of Superman vs. giant robots, a great matchup since the 40s. Still, he has a way to go with his powers.
