REVIEW: My Adventures With Superman S1 Ep 6: “My Adventures With Mad Science”
My Adventures With Superman S1 Ep 6, “My Adventures With Mad Science” sheds some light on the shadowy antagonists and sees all our protagonists to save the day and not just Superman.
My Adventures With Superman S1 Ep 6, “My Adventures With Mad Science” sees Clark and Lois not only set out to rescue Jimmy, but end up down a rabbit hole of a government conspiracy and some real insight into the shadowy forces that have been in the background as we watch Superman find his footing as a superhero. We also get some memorable guest appearances.
After Jimmy (Ishmel Sahid) goes missing, Lois (Alice Lee) and Clark (Jack Quaid) put aside their indifferences and go off to find their friend. While out looking for Bigfoot, Jimmy would stumble across something so much more. There is a lot more Clark than Superman in this episode while he does use his powers. At this point, Lois knows Clark is Superman (and frankly, she isn’t happy about how he kept it from her). So, there’s no need for him to suit up.
Jimmy comes across an old decommissioned Project Cadmus location run by Monsieur Mallah (Andre Sogliuzzo) and the Brain (Jessie Inocalla). Unlike the usual Brotherhood of Evil founders, these two are warm and loveable mad scientists betrayed by the shadow government branch that betrayed their organization. While they aren’t evil scientists, they are mad with all the devices and experiments they continued while in hiding.
The action comes from Clark defending Lois from the giant robots, now identified as OMACs, that have been pursuing him since he revealed himself to Metropolis. He’s really become a journeyman with his newly discovered heat vision. Jimmy also drops a major bombshell to Clark that will change the way he operates as Superman and viewers don’t have to be sharp to put all the pieces together at the end of the second act and learn who and what is really out to get Superman.
Jimmy initially going missing at the end of the last episode set up what could’ve been a side mission-like episode, but the whole adventure actually ties into the main threat a little bit more, answering a lot of questions that viewers initially had. The power of friendship is also the theme here in true Shonen fashion as our three protagonists are together again for the first time in two episodes to help defend the Cadmus outpost from an OMAC onslaught. They really do bring out the best in each other.
Mallah and the Brain may not be villains, but they still continue to represent the experience of being an odd couple. There’s no one really like them in the DC Universe and the series especially runs with it. Rather than take over the planet, they simply want to leave it and find a place where they can be happy. The day has finally come when that hyperintelligent gorilla and disembodied brain are relatable.
