REVIEW: My Adventures With Superman S1 Ep 9: ‘Zero Day Part Two’
Like I said the previous week, My Adventures With Superman Ep 9, “Zero Day Part Two” delivered the twists that only a two-part episode could. Clark’s quest for self-discovery reaches what could be its lowest point, but that doesn’t mean there’s no hope. There always is with Superman.
The finale for My Adventures With Superman Ep 9 ‘ Zero Day Part Two’ is here and as it would turn out, Zero Day isn’t just a fancy episode title – it’s so much more which is exactly what is revealed in this week’s game-changing entry. Dark and light are in perfect balance for this one as Clark must rise and save the day even though some unseen forces say otherwise.
With Clark (Jack Quaid) in custody, the General (Joel de la Fuente) tells him about Zero Day. After Clark had landed in Smallville, the General and Waller (Debra Wilson) were climbing the ranks in the DOD and were on the scene investigating where the ship he came in had landed and embedded itself in the Earth. The unseen ship emitted a signal of some sort and a Kryptonian assault squad appeared through subspace portals. The attack is fanned off and they even leave some of their tech behind, but several lives are lost. This raises more than several questions about Krypton, and Clark is naturally clueless about this. At this point, the General realizes that maybe they have the wrong guy. Waller, being herself, is not so convinced.
Lois (Alice Lee) and Jimmy (Ishmel Sahid) begin a wholesome quest with the Newskid Legion from earlier episodes in an effort to find Superman. But they don’t have to break him out as a fight breaks out amid Task Force X. It’s also where we see Slade (Chris Parnell) get his eye patch. Dr. Ivo (Jake Green), now a cybernetic Parasite, is as bitter as ever and wants Superman’s head on a silver platter. The second half of the adventure here is Superman, Lois, Jimmy, and even Metropolis’ efforts to stop the Parasite as he continues to feed off the city’s power.
One of the most compelling things about this Superman incarnation is the mystery that surrounds Krypton. There was never any scene taking place on it in the pilot episode nor is the holographic projection of Jor-El translated into English or whatever alien language Clark would’ve ended up speaking depending on where he lived. In most takes, Krypton is imagined as an epicenter of science and development that was cut short by a bureaucratic system that ignored its own impending demise. But there are somewhere who are more on the antagonistic side. We still don’t have enough to give a concrete answer, but Zero Day wasn’t exactly an ambassador visiting Earth. The General, we get a name drop here so all suspicions are confirmed, looks like he has a heart here. It’s Waller who is the cold one, and honestly, there isn’t a warm Amanda Waller out there in the DC Multiverse. I think his best quality is that he knows innocence when he sees it. Waller also mentions a certain “her” that the General is supposedly close to. Wow, wonder who that could be?
The second act of the episode is Clark and everyone else’s, confrontation with the Parasite. This is one of those Superman battles where it isn’t a round of fisticuffs but more of everyone doing their part. Sometimes, it isn’t always Superman who saves that day, and Clark learns that valuable lesson here at a time when he really needs it.
