DC Comics have just announced at New York Comic Con 2023 that their iconic label ‘Elseworlds’ is returning in 2024. ‘Elseworlds’ brought us legendary stories such as; Suoerman: Red Son, Kal and Kingdom Come and now it’s coming back with a fresh slate of stories!
DC went on to announce the first phase of announcements which are set to release at some point in 2024. Here is a breakdown of the upcoming releases;
“Gotham By Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age” is set to be a 12 issue series that expands the 19th century universe. Written by Andy Diggle and art by Leandro Fernandez, the pair promise to “expands that world far beyond the confines of Gotham City, introducing DC’s greatest heroes as they come together for the first time”.
“Dark Knights Of Steel: Allwinter” is set to be a 6 issue series written by Jay Kristoff, with art by Tirso Cons. It sees legendary assassin Deathstroke stalk a frozen wasteland, killing for coins among a nation of ever-warring jarls. It is confirmed to be part of a larger plan with the Dark Knights Of Steel universe.
“Batman The Barbarian” is set to be a 6 issue series by Greg Smallwood and sees a brutal and remarkable retelling of Batman’s origin set against a rugged, medieval Earth.
“Green Lantern: Dark” is a 7 issue series written by Tate Brombal with art by Wether Dell’edera. The series reimagines the DC universe as dark fantasy wasteland where a post-apocalyptic Earth is overrun by monsters. This series will use magic instead of space, with the only light in the darkness being the flame of the Green Lantern. It will introduce a brand new Green Lantern and instead of using a ring, the character will have an ACTUAL lantern.
“Batman: Nightmare” is a 6 issue series by Clay and Seth Mann. It explores a mind-expanding mystery, beatifically counterbalanced by explosive action. This unflinching reimagining sees Bruce Wayne try to rectify a devastating tragedy by travelling to the past.
“DC vs. Vampires: World War V” is a 12 issue series written by Matthew Rosenberg, with art by Otto Schmidt. It acts as a direct follow on to the previous series, taking place 6 months later and in this series humanity faces their most deadly threat – Barbara Gordon, Queen of the Vampires. Rosenberg revealed that some of the characters who fell in the first volume WILL return in this series.
And last, but certainly not least, “Dark Knights Of Steel II“, though we know the series will be continued by Tom Taylor, there has been no announcement on artist as of yet.
The first phase of ‘Elseworlds’ stories is set to be released in 2024, no exact dates have yet been confirmed.
