DC Comics Announce Upcoming Comics News At SDCC 2024
The newly rebranded DC Comics have announced several upcoming comic book series and announcements at this years SDCC 2024! Here are the Superman related announcements:
Firstly, Mark Waid and Dan Mora are set to join forces for a ‘Justice League Unlimited‘ series which is set to launch post-Absolute Power. Waid has stated that the purpose of this seres is to prop up and upgrade the lesser spotlighted heroes of the DCU. From the cover art for the first issue it appears that the line up so far includes; Superman, Flash, Black Lightning, Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Star Sapphire, and Captain Atom and of course Darkseid, the villain they will likely be going up against.
Here’s a sneak peek of the cover art for #1 and also Dan Mora’s Watchtower concept art which was released at the convention. I am so glad we are getting the Watchtower back and these designs look fantastic!
Waid has also been confirmed for story in ‘Action Comics‘ as part of the ‘Superman Superstars‘ initiative. He confirmed his arc would revolved around problems that may occur in the Phantom Zone and if there are villains in there… where do you put them? Waid is known for his iconic takes on Superman and he reassures fans that he takes the ‘Action Comics’ title very seriously and that he likes to put Superman in moral predicaments. It’s safe to say I am excited to see his story arc in Action Comics #1070-#1073, which is coming in October.
More information about the upcoming series ‘Absolute Superman‘ by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval was also revealed. DC shared an exclusive look at some variant covers which shows another look at our Superman. It was also confirmed that Jason Aaron is actually the first ever ongoing Superman writer who is actually from Kansas – hopefully that will allow him to really get in the roots of this character bringing us something we have never seen before. Aaron stated that he wanted to make this character relevant to the world today… this is something that has been attempted multiple times, so I look forward to his take on it.
Joshua Williamson also confirmed some exciting news for his upcoming story arc on the ‘Superman‘ title! He confirmed that Doomsday will be returning from Hell and it looks like Lois Lane will be come the new Superwoman. Dan Mora will be the new monthly artist on the title which is set to release this Autumn! Williamson said he wanted to bring new things for fans of the existing continuity and I have total faith in him.
Following DC’s announcements so far at SDCC, it’s safe to say that Superman comics fans have a LOT to look forward to!
