DC Release Plans For ‘Summer Of Superman’ Initiative, Starting April

DC have just released their plans for the ‘Summer Of Superman’ initiative, which acts as a celebration of Superman’s legacy with a lineup of comics and graphic novels for fans of all ages.

First up is ‘Action Comics #1085‘ which is out on 9th April. The issue will be the first in a two part story, which will conclude the ‘Superman Superstars’ initiative and is written by G. Willow Wilson, with art by Gavin Guidry. The main cover is by Brad Walker, with variant covers by Davide Paratore, Cully Hamner and Danny Earls

Here is the official synopsis from DC:

Lois Lane sends the Man of Steel to a scientific outpost in the Arctic to investigate a new technology that promises to halt global warming. But when Superman arrives, he quickly finds out that the outpost has been plagued by a villain who plans to melt humanity’s hopes for survival.

Then we see ‘Summer Of Superman Special #1‘ which is set for release on 16th April. Dan Slott will join Mark Waid, Joshua Williamson and Jorge Jiménez for a 48 page oversized one-shot, where each writer will deliver a single story in three acts, the art for each will be brought to life by Jiménez’s dynamic art style. The issue will feature a main and a variant cover by Jiménez, with additional variants by Alexander Lozano, John Giang, Mahmud Asrar, and Dan Jurgens and Chrissie Zullo-Uminga.

The wedding of Lana Lang and John Henry Irons (a.k.a. Steel) serves as the backdrop for an outpouring of love and support from family and friends. However, their big day will also be big trouble, as threats from the past, present and future will spawn major new conflicts for the Superman family. 

On 23rd April we see the release of ‘Superman #25‘, a 48-page oversize issue written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Dan Mora, Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira. The issue is set to celebrate the last two years of the ‘Superman’ series and also connects to ‘Summer Of Superman #1’. It will also set up a brand new storyline which features Superman’s greatest enemy. Dan Mora will provide the main wraparound cover, with variants from Guillem March, Jeff Dekal, Rafael Grassetti, Dave Johnson, Laura Braga, Fico Ossio and an April Fools Day cover by Dan Hipp.

Just as Superman and Superwoman are recovering from their battles with Time Trapper and Doomsday, the biggest problem of all returns as Lex Luthor makes his DC All In return and is ready to fight for control of Supercorp and Metropolis.

On 24th June, ‘Superman: The World‘ will be released, which sees Superman explore the world to help, no matter where the cry come from. In this issue he will not just soar through the skies of Metropolis, but also other territories. The issue will be written by renowned Superman storytellers Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks, who will also join a team of 15 international creators who will all tell their own tales which highlights why Superman is the greatest hero of all time. On 1st July, ‘Superman’s Good Guy Gang‘ is set for release, this is the first instalment in a multivolume series which acts as a perfect entry point for young readers aged 5-7. The graphic novel is written and drawn by Rob Justus and introduces us to an 8 year old Clark Kent and his superpowered friends Hawkgirl and Green Lantern. Here the will test their abilities, grow together and save the day! There will be future books in this series featuring Batman, Wonder Woman, Mr Terrific and more.

If that wasn’t exciting enough, in celebration of Superman Day on 18th April, DC have curated a list of titles featuring the Man of Steel. Special editions of the following titles will be available from participating comic retailers:

  • All Star Superman Deluxe Superman Day Edition Hardcover (featuring a new dust jacket with art by Frank Quitely).
  • Superman Unchained Deluxe Superman Day Edition Hardcover (featuring a new dust jacket with art by Jim Lee).
  • All Star Superman #1 Special Edition
  • Superman: For All Seasons Book One Special Edition
  • An excerpt of the upcoming YA graphic novel ‘Jimmy Olsen’s Supercyclopedia’
  • Action Comics #1 Golden Age-Size Facsimile Edition, which features a homage cover by Dan Mora.

With all of those SUPER announcements, us Superman fans will be busy, and DC promises that this is just the beginning! The ‘Summer Of Superman’ start this April!
