REVIEW: Superman & Lois, S4, Ep 7, “A Regular Guy”
Superman & Lois, S4, Ep 7, “A Regular Guy” deals with the weight and responsibility of Clark’s secret and the consequences he’s faced to keep it safe. We also get the series debut of Jimmy Olsen through flashback sequences which feels bittersweet this close to the series finale.
With Luthor back in Metropolis, life in Smallville seems to have returned to normal. Well, except the little issue of multiple people believing Clark to be Superman. Having the reflexive response of wanting to reestablish the separation of his dual identity, Clark and his sons butt heads over the need to hide who they are. Using flashbacks, the episode establishes the lengths Clark has gone through when only his relationships were at stake. Feeling confident in his decisions, a hostile public confrontation at the diner forces Clark to reevaluate the impact his secret has on the people he cares about and take a final stance about its importance.
There’s some really great, and fairly obvious, Easter Eggs peppered throughout Superman & Lois S4 Ep 7 that make watching it extra special. Although their isn’t much to advance the seasonal storyline, they deal with a thread that’s been building since the season premiere in a way that feels necessary. Douglas Smith’s portrayal of Jimmy Olsen is so spot on that you know who he is before they say his name. It really is a well crafted episode that highlights a perspective of Clark’s life not often addressed.
Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman, Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane, Alex Garfin as Jordan Kent, Michael Bishop as Jonathan Kent, with Douglas Smith as Jimmy Olsen, Erik Valdez as Kyle Cushing, and Sofia Hasmik as Chrissy Beppo.
