REVIEW: ‘My Adventures With Superman’
‘My Adventures With Superman’ is a fresh new take on a legendary character with such a vast history. This is the upcoming anime style Superman series which consists of 10 episodes, I was lucky enough to get my hands on the first 7 ahead of its release on 26th July on Adult Swim.
‘My Adventures With Superman’ is a fresh new take on a legendary character with such a vast history. This is the upcoming anime style Superman series which consists of 10 episodes, I was lucky enough to get my hands on the first 7 ahead of its release on 6th July on Adult Swim.
The series features Jack Quaid as Superman, Alice Lee as Lois Lane and Ishmael Sahid as Jimmy Olsen, with Sam Register as Executive Producer, Jake Wyatt and Brendan Clogher as Co-Executive Producers and Josie Campbell as Co-Producer.
Being such a big Superman fan, of course I had extremely high expectations for this project and it’s safe to say that it exceeded my expectations and then some. This series is a great introduction to Clark, Superman and many of the supporting characters that we have come to know and love. It has great humour which feels real and authentic, and quintessentially anime style action sequences, which I adored. Whilst this is somewhat a retelling of his origin story, it does so at an entry point which is interesting and refreshing. Not only that but the way that they have executed it makes it perfectly accessible for both new and existing fans.
‘My Adventures With Superman’ so far is nothing but joy, I love the animation style! As someone who grew up on Pokemon style anime, seeing Superman in this medium is both nostalgic and exciting to me. Whilst it is absolutely suitable for younger audiences, it does have something for everyone. As a 30 year old, I thoroughly enjoyed it, it’s a great iteration of an era we don’t actually see much of for Superman – just as he’s starting out as a hero and also a reporter. It means we get to see him make mistakes, gain confidence in who he is whilst still learning what capabilities he has and of course his blossoming relationship with both Jimmy and Lois.
The series perfectly captures the personality and traits of each character, you have a rather confident yet cute bumbling Clark Kent, Lois Lane is as fiery and tenacious as you’d expect and I have to say this take on Jimmy is a breath of fresh air! Whilst we know these characters, who they are and what they are all about, this is a fresh, new and exciting take on each and every character that is introduced.
Having now seen ‘My Adventures With Superman’ in this medium, it’s hard to see why it has taken so long to do it. The animation style goes perfectly with a character like Superman and like I said before, this is a series that can really be enjoyed by the entire family. As a die hard Superman fan there is a lot to love with this series, whilst it stays true to the fundamentals of who this iconic character is, it adds a great spin to the character. There are also quite a few surprises along the way which pay a perfect homage and tribute to the past comic book and animated iterations of Superman.
‘My Adventures With Superman’ breathes even more life to an already iconic character and honestly, having now seen the first 7 episodes, it’s hard to see why it has taken so long to see Superman in this medium. Whilst pleasing the veteran Superman fans, this is an extremely accessible introduction to the character that I hope it inspires a new generation.
‘My Adventures With Superman’ is set to release on Adult Swim on 6th July, with the first two episodes premiering on the same day.
